A pelican rookery is an essential link in the ecology that makes Americaa's major fishery sustainable. Hundreds of birds nest on the island. The Associated Press has eye-witness te4stimony that birds and their eggs were stained with the slime BP spilled into the Gulf. The birds work to nest in mangroves directly above patches of crude, making it likely that the few birds who do hatch out will be damaged by oil while learning to fly. Most are likely to die of chemical poisoning.

- BP said Monday it hopes to suck as much as half of the oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico and is getting ready to spit mud into its blown spouting.
- The BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico has resulted in one of the largest oil spills in history and is expected to cause almost unmeasurable environmental damage. The compenastable damage from the oil spill is expected to cause Gulf coast businesses and property owners billions of dollars in damages. The oil rig, which is owned and operated by Transocean and leased to British Petroleum (BP) exploded on April 20th and caused the untimely death of 11 workers.
