The BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico has resulted in one of the largest oil spills in history and is expected to cause almost unmeasurable environmental damage. The economic impact of the explosion is much greater than reported by BP as it is now believed that this will be the worst oil spill in the history of the Gulf, if not the world.

Based on the estimate of 25,000 barrels per day, if the leak lasts for 90 days, it would have spilled 2.25 million barrels or 94.5 million gallons into the Gulf of Mexico. Many experts beleive the actual amount is four times higher.
